Apple iPhone in Penang / Malaysia

I just saw iPhone in the mall just now. It shouldn’t be here because Apple has not announced the iPhone for Asia region but somehow someone manage to bring it in.

If I am not wrong, it’s an unlock version and it’s 8GB. Too bad it’s not on display, just saw the price. Unable to touch it.

As for the price, it sucks. RM3999, which is US$1,174. The shop must be crazy. Singapore also crazy, but it’s still cheaper, selling at US$727.

I just hope Apple faster announced the iPhone in Asia region as Asia has half of the population of the world and when it is announce soon, hope it will be 2nd generation with 3G and more.

So in the mean time waiting for iPhone, let’s play with the iPod touch first.

I just came back from Bangkok. There, at MBK Center level 3, probably about 50 different shops are selling unlocked iPhones for 22000 baht (about RM2200). They had many iPhones out for people to play with, and it was creating quite a buzz.

Most of the shops seemed to have imported the phones by sending someone to New York; they were proudly displaying their Fifth Avenue Apple Store bags.

I wonder why the situation in Malaysia and Singapore is so far behind Thailand. No entrepreneurial spirit in Malaysia? Burdensome SIRIM procedures?

That’s cool Rajulkabir. I think people who bring it in has some way round to skip the custom and SIRIM since it’s not originally from Apple Malaysia.

The above one is definitely stupid, selling at a price that nobody would buy.

But then in SG, they even give you rebate when signing up for local telco package. That’s LOL! Wonder Apple Singapore know about that or not.
