Well, Vista never did this to me before today.. I find it odd that a Windows update would do this, since it seems most problems with this were from a year or two ago — judging by the replies.

I have done that but when I am on skype the other end can not hear me so I have to turn the mic back on and hense the squeal again

I love you so much, I have windows 7 and my mic has plagued me in WoW playing through the speakers as I tried (and failed) to chat. I attempted to follow your list of helpful things (there were some differences but not much) and so far so good in it working, but not playing back through speakers. Love ya! Such a headache in comparison to Win XP's simple “line in” mute thing….why they have to over complicate is beyond me.
