Freeview: Digital Terrestrial HD (via UHF aerial) & Digital Satellite

You should not be confused thinking to receive HD have to be satellite.

I don't want to use the word 'Freeview' in this writing as this is branding name which is used in countries which launched digital UHF reception like Australia, New Zealand, UK. Malaysia may not use this term when it gets implemented. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeview

In 2-3 years, Malaysia will have digital terrestrial HD reception (Freeview). The receive channels via the new technology, viewers require new UHF aerial (the fish bone style of antenna) replacing most current analogue VHF. Please also don't be confused thinking why do we need to install new aerial when all TVs can receive UHF signal. The current UHF signal receive by most TV in Malaysia are analogue UHF. The new technology will be in digital UHF. Malaysia government has plans to decommission the current analogue VHF/UHF in your home in phases. This is the direction the whole world is moving onto.

Besides new aerial, viewers need to have a decorder to convert the UHF signal to digital transmission. Decorders can have functions like tv schedule, pause, subtitle control, etc. Only decorders with stored memory (hard disk) will have multiple channels recording capability, rewind, etc. Decorders without hard disk will be a lot cheaper.

This digital UHF is also capable to transmit Radio channels.

Digital UHF is another technology capable offering HD, besides satellite companies like Astro. But HD content is still depends on each channels. Similarly, if you pay Astro for the HD monthly fee, it doesn't mean you are receiving HD content on all channels. There are only 5 channels with HD content which are Astro SuperSport HD, ESPN HD, HBO HD, National Geographic Channel HD and HISTORY HD. http://www.astro.com.my/byond/channels.asp Similarly for a start, most channels on digital UHF will not be HD.

Besides digital terrestrial HD, government may also implement free channels satellite with almost similar channels with former. The benefit in having satellite HD in Malaysia is it will covers many rural area which digital terrestrial tower be not economical to be built. I believe current astro dish will be compatible to receive these channels.

Use RG-6 cable to connect to the aerial, as this cable has minimal signal loss. Signal strength reduce with longer cable, using splitter (to connect fews TV), etc.

I believe the reason astro buy back is wanting to build a model in implementing this new coverage of tv system. In another word - monopoly (yes, again).

After it gets implemented many TV/LCD/LED backlit sold will have 'freeview' built-in. It mean you don't need to have a decorder to receive those channels. Thus, delay the purchase of TVs if you don't need it. The new built-in digital UHF reception is called iDTV.
