Manage Your Data Usage on Android with NetSentry

I realized that my Nexus One uses a lot of data. Although I do have a data plan, but sadly, it’s not unlimited, I only have the 500mb data plan and unlimited data plan is rather expensive for Maxis.I turned of Gmail syncing and now it only auto sync Calendar and Contact.

I need to test use for another month to see whether 500mb is enough for me or not. The only thing I must not do to make sure that I won’t use a lot of data is Youtube, as you know Youtube sucks a lot of data.

Unlike my old Nokia N95, there’s no data counter on the Android. But after some searching in the Market, I found an application that can shows how much data you have used and auto resets every month. It’s called NetSentry, better than NetCounter IMO.

I set 500MB data limit, so I assume there will be a notification when reaching the limit. Hopefully, 500MB is enough for me or Maxis must revise their data plan rate.

Google Releasing Chrome OS by Fall 2010

Google just had an official event at their HQ in Mountain View and announced their latest project, the Google’s Chrome OS (Operating System). Rumors were going around before that, some believes and some don’t and finally the thing is real. They go opensource which means things can be easily tweaked, hacked, coded by coders.

Google targeted it to be used on netbook because of it’s simplicity and ease of use and since it’s open source, it’s free and most of the installed apps are web apps.

Looking at the UI, it’s just like the Google Chrome web browser and yes, you can say that the whole browser is your OS.

Since it’s just announced, hard to conclude that it’s the best OS for the netbook and Internet use. I believe it won’t be replacing your desktop OS any soon or never. There’s like Linux, Fedora, Windows 7 and some even hack and installed Mac on the netbook. Well, I believe most people will go for a Windows pre-installed netbook. But being a geek, I would want to try it.

In a simple words, Chrome OS is OS in a Google Chrome Web Browser with applications and functionality.

I am using Windows 7 on my Acer AspireOne and is loving it. If it wasn’t the hardware problem, I would have already install a Hackintosh on it.

What OS do you run on your netbook?

Seesmic Now On Windows, I Prefer TweetDeck

Fullscreen capture 11192009 85311 PM by nicholaschan

Seesmic, another Twitter client for the desktop, previously available on the Mac, web browser as web application and the iPhone is now available on Windows! I’ve seen quite a number of people started using Seesmic once it has released to Windows and I gave it a try. It runs on AIR platform same as most of the Twitter client out there and it’s fast. My first impression was that it just seems like another TweetDeck with faster interface and Facebook. Used it for a couple days and today, I made a switch again, back to TweetDeck.

I actually just found out that TweetDeck has Facebook column too.

It’s not that Seesmic is not nice to use, it’s fast, like the columns but I prefer a black theme, so I went back to TweetDeck. =)

What’s your favourite desktop Twitter client by the way? Follow me on Twitter too!

Firefox Beta Updated Graphic Comic Page

I don’t really speed test my web browser. I am a huge Firefox fan and is using their latest BETA build 3.6b3. So far so good, still haven’t feel any great change yet, feeling a little bit uneasy with the Windows 7 integration with tabs showing when hovering over the Firefox icon instead of the browser.

Just updated their BETA and I was welcomed with this graphical comic page. Frankly, not so pretty because I am not a comic fan. Haha.

So you are still on IE? I recommend you to make a switch to Firefox.

What’s your favourite browser? Anyone uses Google Chrome?

Maxis Maybe Bringing FTTH and HDTV to Malaysia

Fullscreen capture 11162009 110738 AM.bmp by nicholaschan

Was looking around the web and found out from a Tech enthusiast’s blog at Cnet about him beta testing Maxis FTTH (Fibre To The Home) service. So it seems like another FTTH provider is coming soon competing with TMNet and other little FTTH provider.

Looking at the download and upload speed, it’s fascinating and I love that. Unfortunately, all these sweet talks are just, er, sweet talks. Still haven’t see an official rollout of the service yet. Maxis was into broadband but looking at their 3G wireless broadband plan when compare to other service provider like Digi and Celcom, I would rather go for other because of the pricing.

More to come, as Maxis will be providing an IP phone for testing calls. Astro and Maxis are going to do a tie-up to provide HDTV through the optical modem. Finally, justification to buy an HDTV!

As for the HDTV, it’s mentioned from the BETA tester blog that it will be streaming through the Internet. Great! I care about HDTV in Malaysia more because we are so so lagging behind. Having a widescreen full HD tv at home is just useless without any HD channel. So let’s wait and hope it will come very soon.

DiGi Please Come to Penang for Promotion!

Fullscreen capture 11152009 12027 PM.bmp by nicholaschan.

That’s the question, DiGi recently launches DiGi 3G Internet and connection in Klang Valley and the Klang Valley folks has pretty good deal at there. I shouldn’t say it’s pretty, it’s more than pretty, awesome, bombastic, huge, gigantic! Looking at the price of BlackBerry and the new Nokia N97 Mini, it’s selling for as low as RM99 and the DiGi’s latest Blackberry plan is cheap, when compare to Maxis and Celcom!

There’s limited unit and it’s all sold off very fast in the first hours. If I live in Klang Valley, for sure I’ll go camping at the mall already! They should come to Penang! Frankly, felt sad when I see them tweeting about it and I am so far away from Klang Valley.
