Who still uses a Floppy Disk or Diskette

I have almost forgotten diskette is called floppy disk and the floopy disk is called the diskette. Thanks to Google, it reminded myself. I want to say, oh god, there’s still people on earth using floppy disk as a data saving tool and it’s my school.

I was in charge of some editing work for the school magazine and they got me a floppy disk and I didn’t know how am I gonna read it because I have not been using this for like many years. Moreover, I don’t have floppy drive.

I remembered brother has a USB floppy drive that comes with his Fujitsu laptop years ago. I dig everywhere in my cupboard and found it lying there covered with dust.

After connecting via the USB, I found out that it doesn’t work. “USB not recognized.” Oh my god, tried all ports and it still doesn’t work.

Gave up and I’m not going to work for it anymore. Will just ask them to transfer it to a flash drive or something.

This is not cool, that’s why Mac didn’t have a floppy drive last time, but yet it’s still so cool.

May desktop show off with dual-monitors and Yahoo! Widgets

IMG_2384

I am liking my desktop wallpaper right now because I am not a Mac user faking to use a Mac OSX Tiger wallpaper. I’m here to share with you my very simple and clean Vista desktop.

desktop 2

I uses a dual monitor setup, a Dell 24″ connected via DVI and a Dell 17″ in vertical position connected via VGA cable to my old Nvidia 6800 graphic card. The second monitor serves like a widget monitor displaying some Yahoo! Widgets. I don’t use Windows Sidebar because I just don’t like it.

I did not turn on any icon because I access all my frequently use program via the small icon on startbar. It makes my desktop simple and clean.

I like dual monitor setup, I am not use to one screen right now, it’s like once you go dual, you can’t go back. I did not purposerly go and buy a second monitor, it’s actually an old monitor but now it serves as my secondary screen for productivity, extra desktop space and also widgets.

Macworld Conference and Expo 2009

Macworld 2007 by Laughing Squid.

Photo taken by “Scott Beale / Laughing Squid“.

It’s the beginning of a new year and there’s always a few tech events to follow up. 2 events that are happening in this week are the Macworld Conference and Expo and Consumer Electronic Show (widely known as CES 2009) are back with a lot of surprise I believe.

Talking about Macworld, this year will be the last year that Apple hosting this event and from then on, there will not be Macworld anymore. Another is Steve Jobs, Apple Computer’s won’t be delivering the keynote too. Rumor has been spread that this is related the health problem of Uncle Steve. Of course, there’s no official evidence and announcement shows that Steve is not well.

Anyway, geeks like me staying in the South East Asia will be staying up late to catch the live keynote of Macworld at 1am GMT+8 Malaysian Time, which will be happening at 9am PST there at San Francisco.

What I am expecting and hopefully to be announced are:

  • new iPhone update (both software and hardware).
  • new Mac Mini (powered by Nvidia chipset).
  • new iMac (powered by Nvidia too like both the MacBook and Pros).
  • Snow Leopard.
  • a netbook by Apple.
  • a media server or a new version of Apple TV.
  • iLife 09 update and iWorks too.

It’s the last year and hopefully there’s some surprise for Apple fan like us.

Using the Google Desktop

google desktop

Windows Vista is a bit laggish to me, sometimes. I running on a 2GB and AMD 64 3000+ 2.0Ghz machines and it’s not powerful enough. I used use Windows Sidebar as my personal organizer with the weather info, todo list and calendar, but it had been running slow on my computer.

The Dashboard on a typical Mac is surprising smooth and fast, but Windows Sidebar is not.

Google DesktopI’ve already disabled the Windows Sidebar and I’ve just installed Google Desktop as a replacement. It looks just the same, just with an additional Google logo on it. I do not want to install the Yahoo Widgets because it’s always slow, I want to give Google a try.

It’s simple and there’s some cool widget to use. Like the Todo List, it will sync it with your Google account so you can check it when you are away from your keyboard or let’s say on the go. Google Desktop was actually a search feature for the desktop which immitate the spotlight and now there’s a sidebar for widget/gadget.

It indexed all the files in your computer, and the search bar is surprisingly fast. I’ve tried the Spotlight on a Mac and no doubt the Spotlight is still the best search feature.

Nevertheless, I am loving the Google Desktop. Simple, neat and organized.
