Guide: Playing MKV HD Video on PS3

Some people have their PS3 at home, they only use it for games and Bluray movie. But have you think of you are capable of playing HD video via the PS3? I have plenty of MKV format video in my computer (don’t ask me how do I obtain them), but then I only watch it on my PC. Now I realised that PS3 is a actually a media player too but unfortunately, it doesn’t support MKV file format. That’s the suckest thing to me.

Though, things don’t come to an end so fast. I have actually found guide on the net on how to watch MKV video on PS3. It’s pretty simple, convert it to a PS3 compatible format then transfer it to the PS3 then you are ready to go.

Some people are worried of video quality would be downgraded during the conversion but if you use the right software, it won’t. So the software is called mkv2vob, it’s a freeware, download it, convert it, transfer it.

Browse for your MKV file and select your destination directory which is also the output folder.

If your PS3 doesn’t connect to a amplifier via S/PDIF digital cable, you may not hear DTS surround sound, so you have to CHECK “Always Transcode DTS”.

On the other hand, if you want to transfer your file via a flash drive or portable HDD, you need to split your file. Sucks right? It’s because that PS3 only recognizes FAT32 format and the problem is you can’t transfer any file larger than 4GB into a FAT32 formatted HDD.

Unless that you have your PS3 connected into your network, you need not split it, you can just stream directly or just copy from your network.

As for me, my PS3 is not connected into my home network, my house runs wireless and it’s not capable for HD streaming. My method of watching MKV video without splitting is by burning the converted video into a dual layer 8.5GB DVD+/-R.

PSP Go, My Impression

231020091682 by nicholaschan

PSP Go has been release for a few weeks here in Malaysia already, selling for RM1099. I would say the price is expensive and I might go for parallel import if it’s cheaper because my first generation’s PSP is a Japanese parallel import unit, which means, not official from local Sony Malaysia. I still can’t find any demo unit in-store in Penang yet, the one I’ve tried was in Singapore few weeks back.

My first impression on this little gaming machine when it’s first announced was, sucks, smaller screen, weird button placement. However, thought changed after getting my hands on the demo unit in one of the Sony’s store in Singapore. It felts incredibly light, the button were comfortable with my tiny hands and the screen was not really smaller. It’s just like shorter but it’s still a very big screen when having it on hands, near to you. I already have a first generation PSP, but I do want to have this new one in my bag, it’s cool, mine is like so old.

What do you think about the PSP Go?

An Asian version of PlayStation 3 40GB. I am not really interested with the games, he got Grid, Assassin Creed, Dragonball, Civilization, Tom Clancy:Hawk, Fifa Street 2, Army of 2 and Lumines Supernova and Flower in the hard disk. I like Flower and Luminues Supernova, it’s mini game and simple which = to fun.

The TV is a Samsung 32″ 720p HD TV, unfortunately it’s not full HD.

Buy a Cybershot T90 and free a W595

IMG_0085

Last weekend, I was walking around Prangin Mall and saw a line of people lining up beside the Sony store. I saw the Sony Cybershot T90 poster and thought that they were one of those who want to be first to get their hands on, I thought they were hardcore fan of the camera so the line up for it. I was wrong, I was wrong, I got everything wrong until I went to Gurney Plaza.

There’s no line then because it’s like a few hours after 3pm. Only I knew that for the first 10 customer that buy the latest Cybershot T90 will also get a Sony Ericsson W595 Walkman mobile phone. That time I was like “wtf, why didn’t I check properly and join in the line?!”. It’s like killing two birds with one stone, a camera and a phone.

I wonder why they knew about it and I don’t. I should have be more informative and check on something out properly instead of just guessing around. I was so silly that I miss a good opportunity. Oh gosh.

By the way, Cybershot T90 is pretty becaus it has HD video recording and it’s slim. I like, but I don’t really know about the picture quality yet. One thing is good about Sony is that they always makes good looking camera with so-so but not superb quality digital camera.

Blu-ray movie rental in Penang

IMG_9790

I was window shopping at Prangin Mall last weekend and I walked past the gameshop (Ace Electrical and Electronics) which I used to visit quite often but not now because I am not really into gaming right now.

Just a little glanced around what’s going on in the shop and at the new console, I saw a piece of paper writing “Blu-Ray Disc For Rental”. I didn’t go in to ask about detail because I have no intention of renting a Blu-ray movie right now but perhaps in the future I would.

That’s a good start for Blu-ray renting business here in Penang and hopefully more and more people will go for Blu-ray so in such, more rental shop will be up in town.

I don’t have a Play Station 3, but my brother does and he only owns a Blu-ray title and that is the Spiderman 3 (bought second hand for around RM70/19USD) . Reason of not buying anymore because the price of a single Blu-ray title is freaking expensive.

Do you have or watch Blu-rays?
