Confusing on getting a Windows Surface RT, Android tablet or iPad? That’s the latest question that one of my friend ask me. I do not do a lot of analysis on which is good and not, but I can give a very general opinion of mine that with one is more versatile, functional, and all-rounder. Tablet war was always leaded by the iPad, then the Android tablet, then now, the Windows Surface with RT is catching up the war.
Let’s talk about Android, Android tablet like Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Asus Transformer, Acer Iconia Tab and many more low-priced Chinese-made tablet are always not in my list of purchase even how sophisticating the hardware and specification is. The marketing concept of Android is to play with high-end specification which makes you think that buying that tablet is worth any penny of it. You get a good camera, fast processor and so on. I wonder why, most of Android’s tablet built-quality are mostly plastic, it just feels not solid enough when holding on hand, feels filmsy. Samsung is good, Samsung Note 10.1 has a good feature that is the stylus but then the environment of Android is just not strong to provide a good library of Android tablet apps, and apps actually powers most of your mobile usage and functionality. Well, some might argue that they only use the basic function on the tablet, then thet are just under utilizing the capability of the tablet.
Windows Surface RT? This is a good tablet on the market, with high quality built body, beautiful screen, sleek and clean Metro UI running on Windows 8 RT, reasonably priced, built-in USB port for easy file accessing and transferring and comes with a beautiful and functional keyboard cover. This seems to be very good. I have already came across with a few friends telling me that they want a Windows Surface RT. Yes, this indeed to be a good machine with all the good specs and features, but wait, the problem actually lies in the OS. Please do not be confused that Windows 8 RT will work the same as Windows 8, no it doesn’t. You can’t install a normal Windows software, all you can download is from the Marketplace. At this moment, the Marketplace is still lack of sufficient amount of quality apps for the Windows Surface. Thinking about the touch keyboard cover? Forget about it, it’s just not comfortable to type on, but it just psychologically makes you feels that it worth you money on it that you get a cover and a case at the same time. I am not totally against the Surface right now, I am actually quite interested in it, because it’s Windows, and Windows is getting better, no doubt. BUT, I would say, wait, wait for Surface 2, 3, when the system and device gets a handful of users and apps. If you really need one, get a Windows 8 tablet from other manufacturer instead, Acer, Asus, Dell or Sony.
Finally, the Apple iPad? Undeniable, it’s good, beautiful and sleek design, strong support of apps and OS, wide variety and standardize accessories, well-priced and it’s Apple. People complains that Apple creates a wall-garden for all their product where it’s not open like Android, but who cares when the apps are quality, the products are good. I do not deny that I am not an Apple fan, but being an iPad user, I just find it’s bring me so much convenient and with the huge amounts of apps in the AppStore, it surely do brings out the performance of this little tab. I read on it, I annotate note with a high quality stylus from Bamboo, I watch videos, I surf the Internet and I play games (most popular game developer create games for the iOS) and the list just goes on and on as there’s a galaxy of apps that I have yet to discover.
Well, guess I do not need to write further more on the Apple iPad because the answer for the above question is – Apple iPad.
