Best Prepaid SIM For International Student In UK – Giffgaff – If you are coming to UK for study or just want to look for a good prepaid (they call it Pay As You Go PAYG here) SIM, I would recommend you GiffGaff. I have been here in the UK for 2 months, and Giffgaff has been doing fine for me so far.
I actually got the SIM from a friend who brought it back to Malaysia a few weeks back before I departed to the UK. You know, you can actually activate the SIM with a foreign credit card, just use your home country credit card and use your UK’s address as billing address to pay for it.
Well, PAYG sim in the UK is all free, unlike back in Malaysia, you have to pay for one. You only have to pay to buy credit, or Goody bag for Giffgaff. What I like about Giffgaff is just one thing, cheap monthly, only £12/month, you get unlimited data, 250 minutes of free call to UK number, 250 free texts. One more thing, Giffgaff to Giffgaff calling is free.
Calling back to Malaysia is only £0.03/minutes, which is reasonably cheap. Check more about the international rate here. One sad thing for me is there’s no 4G LTE on Giffgaff network. Giffgaff is actually running on O2 network, it’s not a telco on its own, and there’s no customer support, all their support is supported by other Giffgaff user on the Internet.
There’s other alternative like Lebara, Lyca, EE, 3, T-Mobile and more, but still I find Giffgaff is the cheapest for unlimited data. Some friend complained about the network being slow, or not stable, so far I’ve experienced downtime once for about few hours, luckily Giffgaff admitted that mistake and credited an extra £3 into my account. Great. Good luck to you, future and current international student in UK like me. Cheers.
